Searching on the WWW
Problem: What if you don't know the URL of the webpage you are
looking for or simply want to research a topic.
Solution:
Net Search Button
On your browser you will have a button called something
like "Net Search Button". This will take you to a
site maintained most likely by the company producing the
browser, that lists some of the most common search engines.
This is a great way to connect to these engines and finding
out which are currently the most popular.
Using a Search Engine
You will get a lot of practice doing this and it is
an important part of finding information on the Internet.
A search engine webpage is a page that allows you
to do the following:
- Type in a topic, name etc. as a search string.
- Let you browse topical areas.
- Let you narrow your search or in other ways change your search parameters.
Steps to perform a simple search:
- Go to a search engine webpage (try http://www.lycos.com )
- Type in your search string in the window provided
- Hit the "Search" or "Findit" button
- You will be presented with a list of hyper-text links
to webpages that somehow are associated with your search string.
To go to them simply hit the link and hit the "Back" button to return
to the search list of links.
